reflection on March 30/2010

Today in class we started a project on computer builting and i personally dont like it too much. i would rather do something such as animations or creative things such as the last unit we had done. i am not a huge fan of the technical part of things such as the computer. i had trouble understanding this project in the beginning but right now i know what i am doing and i will work on it a lot more focused tomorrow. today was not much of a work day for me because i was just trying to understand what i am doing but i did get started on it a little bit. i also want to explore some of the other sites that you recommended on the class website tomorrow. maybe once i start the project in more dept i will enjoy it a little more.

reflection on March 28/10

today in class, we pulled open a tower and looked at what is inside the entire tower. i found it really fascinating and after trying to pull apart different pieces i was shocked at how tightly it was put together. i think that inside of the computer looks so much alike that its very hard to tell what part is what part. i really dont like the technical part of things such as the inside of a tower i dont know why im never sure interesting in them. however i did have fun today looking inside the tower of a computer and it looks like a mess inside but i have more fun doing activities on the computer than looking at the technical part of things :D

Inside Features of a computer- fateh, Puneet, Jaspreet, Laila

Inside Features of a Computer:
1. The RAM is located in the center of the motherboard and attached with two clips. Two RAMs are side by side. The bar on each RAM indicates how much MB of RAM there is and there is a bar for each RAM. Our RAM has 128 MB. We would be comfortable doing this because it is really simple.
2. The Hard Drive is located close to the CD Drive. The Hard Drive is connected with numerous different wires some yellow, black, and red.
3. The Power Supply is located close to the back of the drive. It has 10v watts power. If you chose to have Low Watt power you would end up saving a lot of space however the drawbacks for that option would be that you would only have limited stuff to open at one time. the higher watt power would allow you open and use many things at ones but you would have to consider the fact that a lot of space would be taken.
4. The CPU is located under the middle fan and there is a fan located on top of it. we find it a bit challenging to get access to the CPU because the fan get in the way so you would have to remove the fan first before getting access to the CPU. this is most likely set up in this manner so that the fan keeps the CPU clean and dust free.
5.The CD drive is in the top right corner of its CD-Rom and I know this because it is labelled on the outside of the slot.
6.There are 2 fans in the inside and you could add more too keep the computer dust free and cool at all times.
7. Yes there is a video card and it is integrated.
8. Yes there is a sound card because it is pointed out in the motherboard
9. We could add more fans, more RAM and possibly add a better CPU
10.
Advantages to upgrading an old computer:
1. it would save you money
2. you could upgrade it in a way that best suits you depending on whether you need the computer for schoold, music or gaming.
3. it would give you better knowledge on what goes on inside a computer.
Disadvantages:
Disadvantages to upgrading an old computer:
1. it takes time
2. our computer itself would stay oldfashioned
3. you need to know the inside of a computer properly so you do not screw up

building/buying a PC

advantages to building your own PC:
1. by building your own PC it would give u knowledge on how each component works and the technical part of everything.
2. you would also have the control over the hardwares that you can set up into your PC which would depend on what you want to do on your computer. Gaming is an example
3. if you want a computer for gaming and need specific components, by building your computer you could save a lot of money.
advantages to buying your own PC:
1. you could get a warranty on your computer of atleast a year or more. with the one you build at home, you would have to fix it yourself.
2. most PC's also come with free technical support, so you dont have to point fingures at different manufacturers because you bought everything from one place.
3. lastly, less time and knowledge. you need time and the knowledge to know how to build your PC. it could be a really challenging task to complete.

My opinion:
i would rather buy a computer because i find it a lot for easier. i don't think i would be able to put a computer together and make it work well. i dont really care about the components and etc. as long as i have a computer that works well, that's all that matters to me.

3.1 introductions of computer systems

Questions:
1. What is the tower? - What does it look like? - What is its function?
A: computer tower is the main part of the computer. It is the part that contains the motherboard, power supply, cd/floppy/dvd or any other drives or parts. - The motherboard is the part of your computer that wires all of the other parts together.

2. What is RAM? - What does it look like? - What is its function? - What does RAM stand for?
A: Ram is abbreviation of Random Access Memory, a virtual memory to store data temporarily

3. What is a Hard Drive? - What does it look like? - What is its function?
A: fundamental part of modern computers. The hard drive is where all of your programs and files are stored, so if the drive is damaged for some reason, you will lose everything on your computer

4. What is a DVD and DVD drive? - What do they look like? - What is their function?
A: DVD, also known as Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, is an optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are video and data storage.

5. What is a ethernet cable? - What does it look like? - What is its function?
A: Ethernet cables connect network devices such as modems, routers, and adapters. They transmit data using the Ethernet protocol.

6. What is a motherboard? - What does it look like? - What is its function?
A: The motherboard serves to connect all of the parts of a computer together. The CPU, memory, hard drives, optical drives, video card, sound card and other ports and expansion cards all connect to the motherboard directly or via cables. The motherboard can be thought of as the "back bone" of the computer.

7. What is an IDE and SATA cable? - What do they look like? - What is their function?
A: IDE: IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is a standard electronic interface used between a computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's disk storage devices.
SATA:Serial ATA (SATA) is a computer bus interface for connecting host bus adapters to mas storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Serial ATA was designed to replace the older ATA (AT Attachment) standard (also known as EIDE).

<--- IDe

8. What is USB? - What does it look like? - What is its function? - What does USB stand for?

A: Short for Universal Serial Bus, an external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, modems, and keyboards. USB also supports Plug-and-Play installation and hot plugging.

9. What is a video card? - What does it look like? - What is its function?
A: The video card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send graphical information to a video display device such as a monitor or projector.

10. What is a PCI card? - What does it look like? - What is its function? What does PCI stand for?
A: is a computer bus for attaching hardware devices in a computer. These devices can take either the form of an integrated circuit fitted onto the motherboard itself, called a planar device in the PCI specification, or an expansion card that fits into a slot

3.0 background Check

I dont know too much about computer systems. i know the basics of them, such as the computer parts and things such as floppy discs and usbs. i dont know the technical part of how a computer works and i dont know how to acually put a computer up byself. it would be interesting if i learned that but i never really take too much interest in the technical parts of things. i also dont know how to setup a home network but im sure i know how to operate systems.... i think.
i would like to learn more about operating systems and hardware and peripherals.

My Magazine project is on the magazine "Seventeen". i really like these magazines and find them very attractive when i see them at the store. seventeen magazine includes interesting things that teenagers might like to read about and see in a magazine. mostly, this magazine is for girls and so i decided to work on this magazine. i made a new version of a magazine on an east indian look. after putting this magazine together i used the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast to fix up the look of the image on my magazine. i tried my best to make this magazine look exactly like the other seventeen magazines and i feel i did a great job = D
